Xarelto Lawyers New York City
Xarelto is a rivaroxaban tablet that is used as a blood thinner to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people who suffer from atrial fibrillation that is not caused by a heart valve problem. However, claims have been made against the manufacturer that all of its potentially harmful side effects were not made public, and users have suffered as a result. We are here to help match people injured by this medication with the attorney that they need.
History and Uses
Manufactured by Bayer and Johnson & Johnson, Xarelto was first approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration as a blood thinner to decrease the risk of clots in people that have atrial fibrillation, and in 2012 the uses were expanded to include reducing the risk of clots in patients that had knee or hip replacement surgery. Following that, Xarelto was fast-tracked to also be used in treatment for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Xarelto works by inhibiting a protein that is necessary for the blood clotting process. This in turn prevents another protein, thrombin, from forming and helping with the clotting process. The drug is marketed for not requiring frequent check-ups, dietary restrictions, or other preventative measures unlike warfarin that does require some level of constant monitoring.
Adverse Side Effects
The most dangerous side effect that has been linked to Xarelto is controllable bleeding. Whereas other blood thinners have an antidote to reverse the effects of the medication, Xarelto does not have an antidote and cannot be flushed out through dialysis. As a result, hundreds of people have died from uncontrollable bleeding in emergency rooms and elsewhere.
Other serious side effects associated with Xarelto include an increased risk of blood clots forming after surgery, spinal clots resulting in paralysis, abdominal bleeding, abnormal liver function, brain hemorrhage, and reduced platelet levels. In addition, medical professionals have noticed a link between Xarelto usage and serious wound infections or leakage. This can require weeks or months of antibiotic treatment. One study showed that patients who took Xarelto after surgery had nearly four times the risk of infection and wound leakage compared to those who did not take the drug.
Xarelto Lawsuits
A number of lawsuits have been filed against Xarelto for irreversible bleeding and other potentially fatal side effects. Many of these cases revolve around Bayer’s misrepresentation of the safety and effectiveness of the medication. As of April, more than 400 separate lawsuits against Xarelto and Bayer were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation for claims that uncontrolled bleeding and clotting led to permanent damage or death.
