Propecia Lawyer New York
Propecia, otherwise known as finasteride and Proscar, is a medication that is used to treat male pattern baldness in addition to treating an enlarged prostate. However, in recent years users of Propecia have suffered from serious adverse side effects that can have permanent damage. Our service helps those who have been injured by this drug find the legal representation that they need.
History and Uses
Propecia, originally known as Proscar, was approved for use in 1997 to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition that enlarges the prostate. One of the unknown side effects of the drug at the time was that it caused some men to grow hair. Proscar was experimented on by Merck & Co. and transformed into Propecia, a drug that treats male pattern baldness.
The medication works as a five alpha-reductase inhibitor, which treats conditions affected by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The most common DHT conditions include male pattern baldness, enlarged prostate, and prostate cancer. Propecia decreases the level of DHT in the system, reducing the effects of DHT conditions.
Adverse Side Effects
The most common side effects revolved around men’s sexual health, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders. The majority of men affected by these adverse side effects were between the ages of 21 and 46 years old. On average, the sexual dysfunction lasted 40 months after a consumer stopped taking Propecia, but some reported that the adverse side effects lasted for years or became permanent.
Other side effects associated with Propecia include allergic reactions, depression, male infertility, breast enlargement and tenderness, testicular pain, and male breast cancer. These adverse side effects were seen more often and more severely in younger men taking Propecia.
Lawsuits Involving Propecia
In 2011, two major clinical studies found an increased risk of prostate cancer in patients who take Propecia, and the FDA required that a warning label be attached to the packaging. In addition, the packaging had to be amended that originally stated that sexual dysfunction would discontinue once the treatment of Propecia ends. However, no recall on the product was issued.
Since 2012, hundreds of men have filed lawsuits against Merck & Co. for the adverse events they suffered after using Propecia. They claim that the company failed to include important information regarding the long-term effects of the medication in their safety label. By April that year, six states had cases pending regarding the side effects of Propecia, and they were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation in New York. As of 2013, that litigation had almost 140 individual cases, and another 250 cases against Propecia are pending in New Jersey courts.
