History and Use of Byetta
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Byetta for use in 2005 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. It is not insulin, and the drug is not to be used for Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. The drug is marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and was created by AstraZeneca. In 2012, Byetta generated $149 million in revenues for the companies.
Byetta is classified as an incretin mimetic and helps the consumer’s body release its own insulin. In addition, the drug stops the release of the hormone that triggers the liver to make sugar when it is not needed, improves insulin response after meals, slows down how quickly the stomach empties, and helps to reduce the amount of food that you eat.
Dangerous Side Effects
In 2013, a study found that incretin mimetics, including Byetta, could cause precancerous changes to cells in the pancreas and other pancreatic problems. Between 2010 and 2012, Byetta and two similar drugs were linked to 292 cases of pancreatic tumors. Previous studies in 2011 also hinted at the possibility that Byetta increases the risk of thyroid cancer, as well. Other common side effects of Byetta usage include:
- Pancreatic cancer
- Pancreatitis
- Thyroid cancer
- Allergic reactions
- Nausea
- Hypoglycemia
- Vomiting
- Stomach discomfort
- Appetite loss
- Increased sweating
…and other side effects that are common to incretin mimetics.
Recalls and Lawsuits Involving Byetta
There has never been an official federal recall of Byetta, but since the pancreatic cancer study in 2013 consumer groups have been lobbying for its recall. In addition, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the AstraZeneca group claiming that the medication gave its patients pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, and caused other damaging adverse events. A multidistrict litigation is currently underway in California that combines six hundred cases where it is claimed that Byetta caused pancreatic cancer.
All of the lawsuits currently pending against Byetta and the AstraZeneca Corporation allege that the company failed to warn consumers and doctors about the potentially harmful effects of the medication. Specifically, the company failed to mention the increased risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. In addition, AstraZeneca has already settled about eighty individual cases involving claims of adverse events associated with the medication.
